Juan de Fuca Cottages

Juan de Fuca Cottages

It’s tough to beat the location of the Juan de Fuca Cottages (they have hotel suites too!)  in Sequim.  Across the straits named after the Spanish explorer is Victoria, BC which is easily reachable by ferry for a day trip.  Bring your passport. And at the edge of the property is Dungeness Bay, home of the delectable crabs. n season you can even take a crab pot out and catch some. If not in season, it’s a great beach for beachcombing and other activities.

You’ll be tempted to spend time in your little cottage, too. There are a half dozen of them, each unique, and each with it’s own view and amenities. There are also suites in two other buildings, including a room with a wood-burning fireplace. Between the water and the nearby Olympic Mountains, you won’t know which way to look!

This area was originally settled in 1851, and the property even boasts a former church built in 1889---now a laundry “shack.” The cottages were begun in 1916, so there is a lot of history here.  Sited on a low bank bluff, the beach is a National Wildlife Refuge.

The cottages have queen beds, completely equipped full kitchens, whirlpool tubs/shower with skylights, CD player, cable TV, VCR/DVD and over 200 classic movies to entertain you. You’ll find fireplaces in the suites.

If you don’t think you want to run out or fix breakfast, you can order a large or continental style breakfast basket the evening before, and it will be delivered to you in the morning.

During the balmy Northwest summers you may wish to rent kayaks and explore the salt water, perhaps paddling out toward the Dungeness lighthouse. Or, rent a bicycle as there are miles and miles of fairly level roads to explore.  Adult and children’s bikes are available, along with the required helmets. Maps, too.

Winter will bring snow to the Olympics and with it out come the snowshoes! These can be rented and with a local shuttle to Hurricane Ridge you’ll have a day of exercise and great photo opportunities.
