Green Tortoise Hostel

Green Tortoise Hostel

A mainstay for economy-minded travelers in Europe, hostels have never quite been as popular in the US.  Seattle’s Green Tortoise Hostel harkens back to the 70s but has adapted with the times and now has accommodations that are more amenable to today’s travelers.Their philosophy is beautiful places, great food, and sociable people are the only essentials for gratifying travel experiences.

Their location is perfect, just across the street from the Pike Place Market, for starters. Privacy issues are easily answered as they now have 18 private bathrooms “just down the hall” as your toilet and shower are behind locked doors. You won’t have to worry about leaving your things in a public space and will feel completely comfortable that you will not be interrupted. And…newly installed radiant heat in the bathroom floors plus dual-flush toilets to save water.

The beds are new, too.  Some of the dorm beds are queen sized if you are traveling as a couple.  Each bed also has privacy drapes and a reading lamp, so you can go to sleep when you are ready.  And, for your comfort, every bed has its own fan and outlets!

Adding to the economy of the Green Tortoise Hostel, your breakfast is included between 6-9:30 am and they also serve a complimentary dinner three nights a week.   And one more very important freebie:  the internet.

Sometimes you can find a special when booking online, which can includes even lower rates when booking for several nights.

You can reserve a bed in a room with four, six or eight beds, with the price dropping with more people.  Or a queen bed, which is more, but still a great rate for all of what is included.  You most likely will be under $50 per person.

Fun and friendship are a theme of the Seattle hostel and it’s partner, Green Tortoise Hostel San Francisco.  On Wednesday evenings, there is an “open mic” in Seattle, so feel free to show off your talent and maybe be discovered!

The website, www.greentortoise.net, also has good information on Seattle attractions, listing their distances from the hostel in blocks, not miles. The hostel is at 105 Pike Street and you may call them at 206-340-1222 or go online and reserve there.
